Mario Bellini “Le Mura” modular sofa for Cassina, dark brown velvet, Italy, 1972, set of five.
Mario Bellini designed the “Le Mura” modular sofa for Cassina in 1972, creating an iconic work of industrial design. Conceived as a sectional system with a strong architectural presence, the sofa is defined by smooth, continuous lines that merge creative vision with technical innovation. Its block-like volumes recall monolithic stone forms, giving the design a powerful and timeless identity.
Modular by nature, “Le Mura” allows for a high degree of flexibility, enabling multiple seating configurations adaptable to different spaces and contexts. The system is composed of self-supporting modules resting on an ABS base, reflecting Bellini’s ongoing interest in industrial logic and advanced manufacturing processes. Distinctive metal buckles, clearly visible on the corner elements, contribute to the sofa’s unmistakable visual language and reinforce its sculptural character.
“Le Mura” can be read as a natural and more restrained evolution of Bellini’s exploration of strong, expressive forms, following the seminal Camaleonda sofa of 1971 and anticipating later works such as the CAB dining chairs introduced in 1977. Together, these projects demonstrate Bellini’s consistent attention to proportion, ergonomics, and a refined sense of elegance within industrial design.
